Lexington County teacher charged with assaulting students

Posted

Jermaine Cornelius Singletary, a 51-year-old teacher at Irmo Middle School, has been accused of assaulting two students at the school.

According to arrest warrants, Singletary has been charged with two counts of third-degree assault.

“When we became aware of these two incidents, we opened our investigation and determined Singletary allegedly assaulted two students on two separate occasions,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said in a press release.

Singletary, according to shoutoutsouthcarolina.com, is the author of the children’s book titled, “The WE in Me," that express the importance of teamwork, and “Scorn Not Torn," which goes into detail discussing how society strips men of their manhood during a divorce.

Singletary is also the CEO of his nonprofit organization called Binding Ties Inc. which was created in 2009. In this organization, Singletary would take students who are in danger of dropping out and coaches them. In this organization, students would be able to learn how to take accountability and the value of becoming successful.

He then expanded this organization with a project called, "Bridging the Gap." This project helps the youth in areas such as  Tanzania, Africa, Brazil, Zanzibar and Kenya.

This isn’t the first time Singletary has been accused of assault. According to Sheriff Jay Koon, Singletary struck a student back in March after he thought a student had touched his head.

Another warrant says that Singletary struck another student in October after the student received portion of an assignment Singletary threw in the trash.

On Wednesday, Nov. 6, Singletary turned himself in and is now being held at the Lexington County Detention Center.

Sheriff Koon says Singletary did not report the incidents to school officials.
