Lexington is back on top of the girls' golf podium in South Carolina, claiming its 15th title after finishing first at the 5A Division I state championship last week.
The Wildcats finished with a score of 336 through 18 holes of match play. Rainy conditions shortened the competition to a single round, giving Lexington a one-stroke win over runner-up Dorman.
With their 15th title in hand, Lexington continues to be the standard for girls' golf teams in South Carolina. The Wildcats have 10 more titles than the next-highest team and won seven in a row from 2004-10.
The team fed off its motivation from last season’s third-place finish and snapped a four-year championship drought.
“This is by far our most rewarding state title that we have ever won,” Lexington head coach Brandon Smith said. “This group of girls worked so hard and improved so much over the last two to three years to put themselves in a position just to have a chance to win. Then, to see all that hard work pay off, is so rewarding to Coach Airasian and myself.”
Three Wildcats received All-State honors for their performance at the championship. While Lexington didn’t have the top finishers; their depth helped deliver them a title.
Lyles Herritage finished with a score of 82. Giavanna Martusciello shot an 84, and Claire Kim also had 84.
Elsewhere around the County, River Bluff finished third at the 5A Division I title match. The Gators finished two strokes under Lexington, scoring 338. The team was one point out of second.
Minge Huang and Charli Heaton had solid outings and earned All-State after shooting 77 and 80, respectively.
Chapin placed fourth in the 5A Division II championship. Ansley Couch earned All-State.
Gilbert finished 11th in 4A with a score of 763 through 18 holes. Adysen Langdale was selected All-State, along with Gray Collegiate’s Kylie Smith.
The girls golf season is officially over in Lexington County. Teams will take the winter off before coming back out in the spring with their boys teams.
