Lexington Paint and Flooring to close after 40 years, remembering owner Wayne Patton Whiteside

Lauren Whiteside Mann fondly remembers her father, Wayne Patton Whiteside, as a people person who could strike up a conversation with anyone he met.

A Lexington native, Wayne was born on March 8 and graduated from Lexington High School. In 1985, he opened Lexington Paint and Flooring, a business that will now close its doors for good.

Wayne passed away suddenly in December from a heart attack, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and dedication to his family, his business and the community.

“He was the heart and soul of the business,” Lauren said of her father, who instilled a strong work ethic in her and her brother, Andrew. Growing up, Lauren often spent Saturday mornings at the shop, answering phone calls and helping her dad with tasks.

Wayne was known for his commitment to customer service, offering expert advice and building relationships with those he helped. According to Lauren, the business grew through word of mouth with customers simply telling others about the service and products.

Outside of work, Wayne was passionate about sports. He specifically loved the Gamecocks. He was musically talented, loved animals and liked cars. Wayne still had the car he purchased at 16.

Lauren said her father taught her to trust her gut no matter what others say.

Above all, Wayne loved his family, including his two grandchildren and was always ready to lend a hand to anyone who needed it.

After 40 years in business, Lauren and Andrew have made the decision to close Lexington Paint and Flooring. The final operating day will be Friday, Feb. 28.

A drop-in event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 9 a.m. until noon at the shop, located at 400 Columbia Ave. in Lexington. The event will provide an opportunity for the community to say goodbye, share memories and celebrate Wayne’s life and work.
