Lexington Police Department offers free box fans

The Lexington Police Department is offering free box-style fans to individuals who need help staying cool during the hot summer months.

“Operation: Cool Down” is a program that is supported by Town of Lexington businesses, churches, civic groups and individuals who provide the box-style fans.

While the program was originally created to assist residents of the Town of Lexington, fans are also distributed to individuals across the greater Midlands area.

The department’s news release recommends checking with your local police or sheriff’s department to see if a similar program is provided in your area.

Those in need of a fan can visit the Lexington Police Department at 111 Maiden Ln. in Lexington during weekday business hours, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For residents with transportation challenges, a Community Action Team office may be able to deliver a fan.

Before receiving a fan, recipients must complete an acceptance and release a liability form.

Since its launch, the program has helped more than 150 individuals or families each year, the release read.

Donations are accepted, and anyone interested in donating may request an in-kind donation receipt, which includes a tax identification number.
