Lexington resumes mask law

Get your mask ready if you’re going to Lexington.

In a 5-2 vote, the Town Council has again approved a face mask law, spokesperson Laurin Barnes said.

The Monday night vote came after nearly 2 hours of public input from people for and against. The 2 no votes were Council members Todd Carnes and Todd Lyle. The 5 yes votes were: Mayor Steve MacDougall, Mayor Pro-Tem Hazel Livingston and Council members Kathy Maness, Ron Williams and Steve Baker.

The ordinance is in effect until May 1, but council said it could rescind it before then if virus cases drop significantly.

A previous mask law ended in November.

Mayor MacDougall and others on council said Lexington Medical Center’s CEO Tod Augsburger, business leaders and school officials said masks were needed to keep the hospital from exceeding capacity and to allow schools and businesses to remain open.

The hospital has 11% of its beds still available.

The county has had a spike in cases since Thanksgiving.
