Lexington’s new traffic pattern progressing

Lexington’s One-Way Pair Project is open for traffic. Drivers are adapting to its one-way directions. Green-light time has increased 40%. However, traffic is still slow due to construction. “It’s going pretty well,” said Lexington Town Administrator Britt Poole. Drivers need to “let it ripen” before they can expect to see its fruit. The One-Way Pair Project was launched June 23 to improve traffic flow. It was adopted in 2012 as one of several hospitality tax projects. Its benefits will multiply with future traffic congestion relief, Poole said. The project diverts southbound traffic on SC 6 to Church Street, left on Maiden Lane in front of Town Hall and right, back into South Lake Drive. Northbound traffic goes straight on Lake Drive (SC 6). Poole said Main Street business owners see a positive impact. Fewer drivers are disregarding the signage and driving the wrong way. On launch day, about 30 people drove in the wrong direction, Poole estimated. Now it’s one or two a day. Administrators expected the adjustment period. Even with construction slowing traffic, no accidents were reported. Police are in the education - not enforcement - phase, Poole said. “I don’t believe a single ticket has been written.” Although traffic may be slower on Church Street and Lake Drive for now, that will change. Paving should wrap up this week depending on weather.
