Matthew Lively's 2-Run Single Gives Chapin/Newberry a Game One Walkoff Victory over Sumter

Lexington falls to Greenville at home

Three Chronicle Country teams, three different outcomes on July 11 to start the S.C. American Legion Baseball playoffs.

Chapin-Newberry Post 193/24 pulled off a walkoff win in extra innings over Sumter Post 15.

Lexington Post 7 fell 7-3 to visiting Greenville Post 3.

West Columbia Post 79 had its Game One at Horry Post 111 pushed back to July 12 due to rain. Game Two at White Knoll High School will now serve as the series opener.

Chapin-Newberry 7, Sumter 6 (8 innings)

Both Chapin/Newberry and Sumter entered the Best-of-Three series with a resume of past success.

Post 193/24 has claimed three state titles and a American Legion World Series since 2013. Post 15 is among the most decorated programs in the Palmetto State with 15 state titles all-time.

Mistakes in the form of six errors put Sumter on the losing end of a walkoff victory by Chapin/Newberry. It was a flyball by Paul Taylor misplayed in leftfield which started a two-run rally by Post 193/24, which trailed 6-5 in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Blake Martin followed with a single and both he and Taylor advanced a base following a sacrifice bunt by Luke White.

North-South All-Star Game MVP Matthew Lively of Chapin High School, who tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, then singled home both baserunners for the walkoff win.  He finished with four RBI.

Sumter finished the game with a stat line of 6-6-6 - six runs, six hits and the six errors. In a touch of biblical irony, Chapin finished with seven runs and seven hits with only one error.

The game featured five lead changes and four ties. Sumter took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning, only for Chapin/Newberry to answer back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

An error on a groundball hit by Lively scored two runs and Gray Wells of Chapin followed with an RBI single.

Hayden Lyons tied the game in the fourth with a sacrifice fly. Chapin once again capitalized off an error in the infield to score a run to reclaim the lead at 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth.

Sumter scored two runs in the top of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. It stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh when Michael Lindler hit a leadoff double and advanced to third with two outs.

Lively faced a full count when he singled to leftfield to score Lindler and tie the game.

With two outs in the top of the eighth, Jayden Earle reached first after a dropped third strike. Earle advanced to second on a throwing error by catcher Al Farmer, moved to third on Lyons' single and scored on a wild pitch by Caleb Taylor.

Taylor ended up getting the victory following the eighth inning comeback.

Game Two is set for Tuesday at Riley Park. Game Three, if necessary, will take place at Newberry College Wednesday.

Greenville 7, Lexington 3

Both Post 7 and Post 3 had the same number of hits (6).

Having the same number of errors as runs scored, however, proved difficult for the host team to overcome in Game 1.

Lexington's Cole Long put Post 7 ahead 1-0 with a RBI double in the bottom of the first inning.

Greenville took the lead the good in the third inning with the first of two, three-run rallies.

Following a leadoff walk by Cameron Barnhardt, Brady Jeffcoat hit a hard liner off pitcher Leighton Bost. As Bost recovered the baseball, his errant throw went into rightfield which allowed Barnhardt to score and tie the game.

Jeffcoat advanced all the way to third base and scored on Wyatt Stone's single. After a double by Dylan Levy, Stone scored from third on Perry Dyer's sacrifice fly.

Greenville loaded the bases in the top of the fifth inning. Whitt Rucker replaced Bost and he gave up three runs on a balk called when he attempted a pickoff throw to third base, a Rich King single and a Rivers Moore RBI sacrifice fly.

Back-to-back RBI doubles by Charlie Compton of Northside Christian and Zach Cowart of River Bluff brought Lexington within 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth.

Greenville scored its final run in the sixth when Levy scored off a dropped third strike to Garrett Axsom. Post 7 finished the game stranding two baserunners in each of the last two innings.

Game Two is set for 7 p.m. July 12 at Woodmont High School. Game Three, if necessary, will take place at Lexington High School.

Matthew Lively, Chapin/Newberry, baseball, Sumter, Lexington, Greenville, Compton, Cowart, Northside Christian, River Bluff, Post 7
