The greatest challenge in recent history is clearly unfolding before our eyes. We are part of this historic moment. What role do you play? It is human nature to give to others. One might call it the American way.

Absent politics, it is the way of most of the world. People are happiest when they can unselfishly do for others. It is a rule found in the Prayer to St. Francis. “It is in giving that we receive…”

My late friend and colleague Jim Rohn and I received the “Legends of the Speaking Profession® designation along with Zig Ziglar in August of 2009. Jim used to say, “Only by giving are you able to receive more than you already have.”

Giving comes naturally to many if for no other reason than to ease their heartache. Admittedly it is self-serving to enjoy the dividends of giving of one’s self to another. That is precisely why some people always find a way to “pay it forward.” It is simply an act that is never wasted.

I am blessed to be married to the most giving human being I have ever known. Christine’s gift to others is not only contributing. It is about making a difference. Her focus is always on others, never herself.

The most financially successful people I know find ways to “out give” whether it is materially, spiritually or otherwise. The giver is always blessed with prosperity. They also happen to be the happiest people I know because they give more.

God blessed us with 2 hands, 2 eyes, 2 ears… almost 2 of everything we need to succeed. With this abundance of gifts, why can’t we use just some of these for others?

What role are you playing? Having been a firsthand witness to the most giving person I have known in my life, you learn their “tricks to the trade.” For instance, it is never about how much or how little they give but how much love they put into it. They never try to help everyone but always find a way to help at least someone who needs it.

Pablo Picasso observed: “The meaning of life is to find our gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” The good givers like my Christine always leave it better than they found it. They always give and rarely take, but in giving they find all they could want in the satisfaction of doing it. Call it rent for the space we occupy here on earth.

Perhaps the greatest act of kindness one can show for another is to give even when it seems like there is nothing to give. By lifting another, we lift ourselves. If by chance you are rewarded financially, do not buy a nicer house or bigger car. Raise your standard of giving, not living.

In these uncertain times, ask yourself “What can I do?” We are in other people’s life for a reason. Someone out there is saying “Thanks for showing up!”

Never pass up the opportunity to show kindness to others. One day it may be too late. Living is giving.
