LMC Foundation awards $264,500 in scholarships

The Lexington Medical Center Foundation has awarded 80 Healthcare Scholarships totaling $264,500 this year.

The scholarships go to students pursuing degrees in nursing and allied health.

Of those awarded, 56 were LMC employees.

LMC Employee Mikayla Morales was awarded the prestigious Dr. and Mrs. Charles Crews Scholarship Award. Mikayla is pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of South Carolina-Aiken.

LMC employees Rachel Abbott, Heather Davis-Morris, Madison Lloyd and Kassandra Pacheco received the honorary Healthcare Service Scholarship Awards.

These awards were made possible by a gift from a special and caring anonymous donor. This donor believes that supporting our employees’ clinical education is a wise investment in the high quality of care so valuable to our patient community.

The 4 candidates receiving the Healthcare Service Scholarship Award were selected as representatives of the donor in their volunteerism, character, and dedication to serving patients and coworkers with compassion and a positive attitude. New foundation board members

The Foundation welcomes 2 new members to our Board of Directors, Lee Bussell and Kenyon Wells. Bussell is Chairman & CEO of Chernoff Newman, one of the Southeast’s most influential integrated communications firms. During his more than 40 years of experience he has been actively involved in corporate communication and issue nanagement ins the state and country.

He has served as chairman of the SC Chamber Of Commerce, The Columbia Chamber Of Commerce, the UofSC Alumni Association and served on The UofSC Board Of Trustees.

He was named Ambassador of the year by the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, State Business Leader of the year by the SC Chamber of Commerce, Distinguished Alumnus of the College of Journalism and Algernon Sydney Sullivan award by The University of South Carolina.

Wells is a 1970 Graduate of David Lipscomb University, Nashville TN.

In 1970, he started as a District Manager at American Dairy Queen, then District Manager and Southeastern Specialist for Baxter/Travenol Laboratories.

From 1974-80 he was an independent distributor for the United States Surgical Corporation in Columbia, pioneering and developing surgical staples to be used in many future major surgeries. He has been a distributor for Intermedics, a startup company in the pacemaker industry and Biotronik pacemakers and cardiac defibrillators. During this time, R. Kenyon Wells and Associates, Inc. was launched. From 2011-18, he served on the State Department of Health and Environmental Control Board appointed by Governor Nikki Haley.

He and his wife Cathy are active members of the Radius Church in Lexington.

Board honor

The Foundation Board made a special presentation to honor the contributions of board member Alicia Barnes. Alicia recently accepted a news anchor post in Charlotte, NC.

Mammography Machines

Our mission started with the Campaign for Clarity in 2016, where the Foundation was able to provide eight 3D mammography machines for LMC Women’s Imaging, Mobile Mammography Unit, LMC Lexington Women’s Imaging, LMC Irmo Women’s Imaging, LMC Chapin and Vista Women’s Healthcare. Although the Campaign for Clarity ended in 2019, through continued support, the Foundation will be funding four additional 3D mammography machines to LMC Lexington, Women’s Imaging, Lexington Women’s Care West Columbia and LMC at Saluda Point.
