High School football officially kicks off this Friday, but before teams hit the field for real, they had another opportunity to compete against other competition during the 2026 Lexington County Sports-A-Rama.
Eight teams competed across two sites this year. River Bluff, North Augusta, Airport and Lexington played at Lexington’s stadium. White Knoll, Brookland-Cayce, Gilbert and Pelion played at Pelion’s stadium.
Games got off to a late start as lightning strikes delayed things by about an hour. Once games got going, teams had to bear out a little rain, but no other stoppages occurred.
Each contest consisted of one regularly timed quarter, and the rest of the game was a running clock until the top of the hour.
Varsity players started the game, but JV teams took over after the opening period.
Game one at Lexington was between North Agusta and River Bluff. The Yellow Jackets took the win 10-7, with all the game’s points being scored in the first period by the varsity teams.
North Augusta scored first with a made field goal, but River Bluff got on the board not long after. Facing a fourth-and-14, Davis Taylor hit Zach Caldwell with a 35-yard touchdown pass to score.
The Gators’ lead lasted just over a minute of game time before North Augusta marched downfiled and scored a touchdown.
Neither team scored after that.
Meanwhile at Pelion, White Knoll easily dispatched of Brookland-Cayce 33-0.
Host teams came out to play for game two. Lexington went head-to-head with Airport, while Pelion was matched against Gilbert.
Lexington won the first period of the game 14-7. The Wildcats scored the game’s first two touchdowns before Airport responded.
During the JV period, the Wildcats expanded their lead, scoriung two touchdowns, including one that came off a pick-six.
In the end, Lexington won 28-7.
Gilbert had similar control in its game, beating Pelion 20-0.
With all the scrimmages wrapped up, teams will get back in the lab this week to work through some kinks before the start of the season.
