Local prep hoops star set to announce college decision

Posted

Lexington High School basketball star Cam Scott will announce his college commitment Friday, Aug. 11 at 2:00 p.m. in the Lexington High School gym.
Scott is considered the top college basketball prospect in the state and is currently No. 32 in his class per 247sports, 20 on On3 and 38 on ESPN in their national rankings.

The schools in the mix for Scott are South Carolina, Alabama, Texas, Oregon, Mississippi, Florida State and Auburn.

It’s been a busy summer for Scott. He earned co-MVP honors at the Pangos All-American Camp where he averaged 24.8 points and 3.5 assists while making a blistering 56% of his three-point attempts.

In June, Scott put on a show at the SC Live Team event in Rock Hill, including a 32-point performance in a 40-minute running clock game against Gray Collegiate Academy. He also hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer against Greenville to tie the game. Each game that he and Lexington played drew the largest crowds of fans and college coaches.

He also gained valuable experience on the travel circuit, scoring 18 points against All Ohio during Peach Jam and averaged 13.6 points per game in the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League circuit for Team United.

Team United head coach Michael Prunty applauded Scott’s improved leadership and ability to read defenses.

“With the ball handling, he’s starting to make that second read,” Prunty said. “He’s able to make the read of the defender who’s on him, but then he’s trying to figure out where the ball should go according to how the defense shifts so he’s gotten a little bit better.”

When it comes to the big college decision, Scott said one of the big factors will be which program can help him get to the next level and which playing style fits him best.

“I’m just talking to coaches, seeing where I can develop my game and I feel like that’s also gonna help where my decision goes.,” Scott said. “I’ve had a lot of coaches talk to me about player development, I’ve gotten to see a lot of players they’ve developed and put into the league so I’m gonna take that information and talk about it with my family and that will probably play a major impact on where I go.”

Scott led Lexington to a 20-7 record last season and a Region IV-5A title. The Wildcats fell just short of a state title after losing to eventual state champion Dorman 60-52 in the state semifinals. Scott and his team will look to avenge that loss and make a serious push at a state championship this season.
