Winning Clemson coach gets $9.3M

Carolina head football coach Will Muschamp received a new deal last year.

He will be paid $4 million this year and more than $28 million over 6 years.

Muschamp’s Gamecocks upset Georgia, but otherwise are having a dismal season.

His pay includes $1.1 million in state salary – the highest-paid employee in the state salary database.

Clemson head football coach Dabo Swinney, who led his teams to 2 national championships, makes $9.3 million annually.

He is the highest-paid college football coach, yet his salary is listed at $245,000, according to USA Today.

South Carolina has the 35th-highest US average student loan debt – $30,861 – according to the consumer website LendEDU.

As of Oct. 3, 3,847 state employees were earning $100,000 or more.

That jumped 8.3% from the same time last year.

That does not include employees of agencies exempt from oversight including state-owned Santee Cooper, the House and Senate and the Judicial Department.

In comparison, the SC median household income in 2017 was $48,781.

Salaries range from $183,238 for family court judges to $198,095 for Supreme Court justices.

The University of South Carolina is the largest with more than 6,500 employees and the most $100,000-plus staffers – 116.

Clemson University has 3,900 employees with 731 making $100,000-plus.

The Retirement System Investment Commission’s 44 staffers make at least $100,000 annually, with chief investment officer Geoff Berg receiving the highest salary – $336,600.

43 state employees make at least $339,750 yearly.

30 work at USC, with the rest at Clemson, the College of Charleston, Medical University of South Carolina or Coastal Carolina University.

Athletics coaches command most of the top spots, followed by deans, vice presidents and other administrators and professors..
