AROUND CHAPIN & IRMO

The end of May is busy! Students cramming for exams, graduations, and Memorial Day activities are all memorable events scheduled for the last few weeks in May.

My oldest son is graduating from high school and just buying the cap and gown was a thought-provoking experience. For all students, public, private schooled and homeschooled, graduation is one milestone celebrated in the journey of life. Congratulations to all parents and graduates!

Memorial Day is a day we honor those courageous men and women who gave their lives serving our nation. We put flags on graves and hold gatherings to honor their ultimate sacrifice. We will all pause to give tribute to fallen loved ones on this day of remembrance. For all those grieving the loss of a soldier, may the peace of the Lord comfort you.

I am a “wanna-be” artist. To further my skills, I doodle and draw with the most complicated colored pencils and crayons Walmart has to offer.

The Crooked Creek Art League and the 7 Oaks Art league are here to help bring out the artist inside you. Check out their websites at www.7Oaksart.com and www.crookedcreekart.org .

What was life really like in the old days? The Dutch Fork Historical Society’s meeting May 20 at the Chapin Library will give you a glimpse of daily life in the 1800s in the Dutch Fork. Bring a friend and jump in the time machine.

In 1794, three men, Peter Schumpert, Ulrich Mayer, Thomas Frick decided that 10 miles by horse, buggy and on foot, was just too far to go to church. This was the start of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Chapin. The church will celebrate 225 years of history May 19 at 10:30 am. Pastor Randall Drafts, one of St. Peter’s own, will deliver the homecoming message. The celebration continues after worship with a picnic.
