McNeal, Thompson named to USA Today All-SC Team

More honors were bestowed Wednesday upon Lexington Chronicle Girls Basketball Co-Players of the Year Danae McNeal of Swansea and Olivia Thompson of Lexington.

The future Clemson University guard was named Player of the Year for the Palmetto State by USA Today’s All-USA South Carolina team. McNeal averaged 24.5 points, 12.6 rebounds and 4.7 steals per game this past season for the Lady Tigers.

She was previously named South Carolina’s Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior and earned a 3rd consecutive Class 3A Player of the Year honor from the S.C. Basketball Coaches Association.

Joining McNeal on the All-USA South Carolina girls’ basketball 1st team was Thompson. A University of South Carolina commit, Thompson became Lexington’s all-time leading scorer and led the Lady Wildcats to the Region 5-5A title and first Lower State final in 40 years.

She averaged 19.9 points and 2.2 assists per game and was named the SCBCA Class 5A Player of the Year.

Both Thompson and McNeal played for the South Carolina team at the Carolinas Classic in Wilmington, N.C.

Rounding out the All-USA South Carolina 1st team list were forward/ center Shayla Nelson (Goose Creek), guard Mya Burns (North Augusta), and small forward Quadijah Moore (Greenwood). Making the 2nd team were guards Taylor Lewis (Spring Valley), Taylor Britt (Richland Northeast), Ta’laysia Cooper (East Clarendon), Unique Drake (Westwood) and Loyal McQueen (Wilson).

Head coach Tim Baldwin of Class 5A girls’ basketball champion Goose Creek was named Coach of the Year.

Lexington High graduate and head coach of 3-time Class 5A boys’ basketball champion Dorman was again named Boys Coach of the Year.
