Meat prices expected to skyrocket

African swine fever in China is expected to raise beef, pork and poultry prices, costing you more at grocery stores and restaurants.

Big Macs, Whoppers and Jimmy Dean sausages are expected to jump as China imports more pork, beef and poultry due to its troubled hog farms.

African swine fever is harmless to humans but deadly to pigs. It has decimated Chinese hogs in the world’s top pork market.

Up to 200 million Chinese hogs will be lost and herds are being culled to prevent it from spreading.

This is far more than the 125 million pigs slaughtered in the US last year. The US Department of Agriculture said this puts a 5% hole in the global meat market.

China could import 33% more pork and other meat to meet demand.

That would leave less meat for you. In the US, farmers and processors produced a record 26.3 billion pounds of beef, pork and chicken last year. Eventually, executives and analysts say, consumers will pay more for meat as a result.
