A student of karate since the age of 6, Beechwood Middle Sixth Grader Nathan W. DuBose won multiple medals at the AAU Junior Olympic Games, held July 27–28. Performing in front of hundreds of people, DuBose won two gold medals, one in kobudo and one in kumite, as well as a bronze medal in kata. DuBose also medaled at the USA National Karate Championships, winning bronze in kobudo. As karate debuts as an Olympic sport at the Summer 2020 Olympic Games, DuBose trains with the goal of making Team USA one day. DuBose studies traditional Okinawan karate, competing as part of the NC Budo Karate competition team out of Belmont, N.C. He began competing three years ago.
