New business blossoms in West Columbia

West Columbia has issued 2,295 business licenses this year.

That compares with 2,306 in all of 2017, according to Ellen Ravenell, who oversees business data.

The numbers are close but five more months are left in 2018.

Cayce-West Columbia Chamber Executive Director Richard Skipper sees the impact new business has had on West Columbia.

“The City of West Columbia is heading toward an era of growth like nothing it’s ever seen,” he said.

New businesses include Tylar Rose formal wear and Mad5 Fitness.

Furniture restorers Attic Fanatic added another location.

Bill Mooneyhan of the West Columbia Planning Commission said he is aware of major retailers eyeing West Columbia.

“We’ve had inquiries in Triangle City and the River District,” said Mooneyhan. “We have been real close on landing some of them, and some will be coming back. It’s just a matter of time.”

Restaurants and grocery chains are possibilities, he said.

Mayor Bobby Horton said so many businesses are considering West Columbia because it has “a good atmosphere for business.”

“We welcome new business.”

Horton said “the level of service in West Columbia is high” with low taxes and utility costs.

“It’s a combination of assets that give us an advantage,” he said. “We’re adjacent to the capital city. We have a hospital and three interstates. An ease of access gives us an advantage.”
