New middle school to change attendance zones

Posted

District 1 parents may be driving their kids to a different school in the fall.

The district’s new Beechwood Middle School will shake up the attendance lines.

Beechwood Middle will be located at 1340 Highway 378 on 34.57-acres in Lexington. It’s scheduled to open in August for the 2019–2020 school year.

The 196,000-square-foot school is designed for 1,200 students with the capacity to serve 1,500 students, the district says.

The proposed attendance zone for Beechwood Middle School alters the attendance lines of Lexington Middle, Meadow Glen Middle and Pleasant Hill Middle schools.

Some students who attend these schools now may attend a different school in the fall.

The district will allow rising 8th-graders the opportunity to stay at their current school for their final year as long as their parents provide transportation.

Beechwood Middle and Pleasant Hill Middle will feed students to Lexington High School, while Lexington Middle and Meadow Glen Middle will feed students to River Bluff.

Lexington Middle currently houses 998 students. Meadow Glen Middle houses 1,040 students, and Pleasant Hill Middle houses 1,205 students.

Parents can hear a formal presentation of the proposed attendance lines and review maps of the proposed attendance lines at a zoning meeting tonight, Jan. 31.

The presentation starts at 6:30 pm in the Meadow Glen Middle School theater.

Parents can also keep up with information about the rezoning process online at http://www.lexington1.net/lexnews/lexington-districtone-begins-zoning-process .
