New trail to go from dam to zoo

Posted

Would you like to walk from the Lake Murray dam to Riverbanks Zoo?

A proposed trail – the Lower Saluda River Greenway – would connect both.

Now the Saluda Riverwalk extends from Riverbanks Zoo to the I-126 and I-26 interchange.

The Central Midlands Council of Governments is working on a Lower Saluda Greenway Feasibility Study.

This involves a 10.5-mile paved path connecting the dam and the zoo.

New paths would be built to connect existing trails and parks.

The trail would give access to 56,000 people who live within 2 miles.

Officials are working on a concept plan, costs and potential cultural and environmental resources.

According to the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission’s website, “Public participation is a major element of the study and will assist with identifying a concept plan and recommended alignment for the Greenway.

“Many opportunities will be available to provide input and stay informed throughout the process and focus is on current and future users of the area’s trail systems.”
