I-20 bridge collision fatality

A Georgia truck driver died Sunday after colliding with a bridge pillar on Interstate 20 in Lexington County.

Benjamin Edward Parker, 44, of Douglasville, Ga., was pronounced dead at the scene due to his injuries, according to Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher.

Parker’s tractor trailer left the right side of the roadway and collided with a bridge pillar near mile marker 57 westbound around 5:30 pm.

He was the only occupant of the vehicle, and he was wearing a seat belt when the incident occurred.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

Industrial Drive homicide

A Lexington woman’s death has been ruled a homicide.

Janet Carol Buril, 75, was found Saturday afternoon in the 100 block of Industrial Drive in Lexington.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher ruled her death due to blunt force trauma to the head.

The Lexington Police Department is investigating.

Oak Grove pedestrian fatality

A West Columbia man was struck and killed by a motor vehicle on August Road last week.

Otto X. Asmond III, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene due to his injuries, Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said.

Asmond was walking across the road when he was struck by a northbound vehicle in the 3500 block.

The driver of the vehicle stopped and remained at the scene.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating.

2 arrested in school break-in

Lexington County deputies have charged 2 men accused of a breaking into Gilbert High School last month.

Tyler Stetson Coon, 18, and Jason Ryan Hallman Corder, 19, are charged with 2nd-degree burglary, according to arrest warrants.

“After the Gilbert High athletic department reported a banner was missing from the gym Sept. 4, we responded and went to work reviewing security camera video,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said. “Coon and Corder can be seen in the video walking around the school at about 2 am on Aug. 30.” Coon and Corder turned

Coon and Corder turned themselves in Saturday. They have been released from the Lexington County Detention Center after meeting conditions of their bond.

Pelion man charged with murder

Lexington County deputies have arrested a Pelion man accused of murder in connection to a shooting death last month.

William David House, 33, is charged with murder, according to an arrest warrant.

The victim has not been positively identified, according to Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher.

House claimed he shot the man in self-defense after he and the victim fought in front of a Pelion Road Home, Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said.

House loaded the shooting victim, who he said was still alive, into a truck and dropped him off in some woods off Bushberry Road.

House never reached out to law enforcement or rendered aid to the man, according to Koon.

The man’s remains and truck were found in North, SC, after House moved the victim a 2nd time from Bushberry Road.

House has been held in the Lexington County Detention Center after his arrest on an unrelated magistrate level charge Sept. 10.

Detectives served the arrest warrant for the murder charge Sept. 17.

County police assist in capture

A suspect that led police on a high speed chase through Newberry County was captured at the Lexington County line Sept. 16.

An officer attempted to stop Carl Michael Burris, 42, of Andrews, NC, on suspicious plates, According to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver fled at a high rate of speed and attempted to wreck the pursuing deputy several times by swerving and slamming on brakes.

The truck continued onto the Lexington County line on Interstate 26, driving in the wrong direction.

SC Highway Patrol, Lexington deputies and Chapin police were waiting and arrested the subject.

Burris was charged with failure to stop for a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, using a deadly weapon, and numerous traffic violations.

Sheriff Lee Foster praised the deputy in being alert to suspicious activity in the community.

Burris is currently housed in the Newberry County Detention Center.

Donut shop robbed, suspect captured Social media helped police capture a suspect in the robbery of Chickenbutt Donuts.

On Sept. 8, Chapin business owners Tre and Sue Dabney discovered the back door broken, their safe missing and no cash in the register.

They posted surveillance video on their Facebook page. Within 15 minutes they had a name, address and car license plates. The suspect was arrested 2 days later.

Patrons showed up to encourage and support them.

Monster J’s Home Improvement hung a new door.

Dynamic Upholstery, Lucky’s Burgers and the Cripps family of Kwick Way gave additional support.
