Northside Christian, Brookland-Cayce basketball players named Athlete of the Week

Sports in Lexington County took a brief pause last week as winter weather delayed many events. With no action on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, many teams had an extended rest before picking up play on Friday.

Despite the break, many athletes showed no rust and put up big performances to help their team win and better their position in the region. This week’s Athlete of the Week winners represent Brookland-Cayce and Northside Christian and had huge games on the basketball court.

Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration, email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchronicle.com.

A.J. Edwards

Brookland Cayce's A.J. Edwards helped the Bearcats win two region games late last week.

Edwards led the team in scoring during both contests. He scored 18 in a 74-32 win on the road over South Aiken last Friday. The next day, the team hosted Airport, and Edwards had another explosive performance, scoring 21 points.

The Bearcats are now 7-1 in region games, with their only loss coming against first-place North Augusta. The team is still in contention for a region title and has another meeting against North Augusta scheduled for Feb. 10.

Edwards will play a key role in the team’s chances during the season’s final stretch.

Evie Godfrey

Northside Christian’s Evie Godfrey is having a breakout sophomore campaign as the Crusaders extended their unbeaten streak last week to improve to 18-0 this season.

Godfrey scored a team-high 20 points in a win over Augusta Christian. She added five assists and seven steals to help give the team its third region win this season.

She followed that outing with a double-double in a win over Hammond. Godfrey was a force on both ends, recording 17 points and 11 steals as Northside won 57-24.

Northside has two more region games this week before back-to-back games against Heathwood Hall. Both Heathwood Hall and Northside are undefeated in region contests, and those meetings could determine the final champion.
