The town lost an icon Sept. 7 with the passing of the oldest living veteran in our area, Mr. Tom Peel. Tom could be seen walking the trail most days regardless of the weather.

The American Legion held an annual “Tom Peel” walk each year and he always assisted with the raising of the new flag at the annual Pelion Ruritan Veterans Memorial service. Mr. Peel will be missed by many of us.

The Town of Pelion will hold a general election Nov. 2. Registered to be on the ballot: Mayor Frank Shumpert and Town Council Larry Sossamon and Chuck Ingle.

Don’t forget the American Legacy Ride Oct. 9. The participants will be coming through Pelion down Highway 178 around 10 am. There will be several groups about 5 minutes apart headed to Batesburg/Leesville. Please plan to come out and support this event. Donations may be mailed to American Legion Post 101, PO Box 373, Pelion, SC 29123. Donations of $500 or more will receive a plaque.

The annual Trunk or Treat will be held along the walking trail on Oct. 31.
