Pelion Ruritan celebrates 71 years

Pelion Ruritan celebrates its 71st birthday this month. Beth Cravens will make the special cake for the club. Invitations will be going out next week for the annual Ruritan Veterans Memorial Service. Special speaker will be Chaplain (Major) Brian K. Smith. More details will be forthcoming. Mark the date on your calendar to attend this special event!

Pelion Elementary will have a Spirit and Hat Day April 26. Students will wear their PES shirts and can pay $1 to wear a hat. All proceeds go to Relay for Life. Lunch Hero Day is May 3. Students are encouraged to eat lunch in the cafeteria that day.

Pelion Library will celebrate National Poetry Month April 25 at 6 pm. It will announce this year’s Poetry Contest winners. This event is for all ages. For more information, call 803-785-3272. North of 50 meets on April 30 at 11:15 am with “Quilts and their Stories.” This event is for ages 60 and up.

Pelion High will have PowderPuff football practice April 24 and 25 at 3 p.m. PowderPuff Football games will be held May 2 at 7 am. College Decision Day will be May 2 at 7 am.

The SC Egg Art Guild will hold make-up classes April 26 and 27 for those “eggers” who weren’t able to attend the regular class.

Did you know that Western Bluebirds have no blue pigments in their feathers? Instead, each feather barb has a thin layer of cells that absorb all wavelengths of color except blue. Only the blue wavelength is reflected and scattered, resulting in their beautiful sky-blue appearance. They can spot caterpillars and insects in tall grass at the remarkable distance of over 50 yards.
