1 dead, another injured after plane crashes in Lexington County

One person died, and another person was severely injured in a plane crash in the Gilbert area of Lexington County on Friday morning.

Andrew Frederick Nichols, 30, of Huntsville, Ala., has been identified by Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher as the individual who died at the scene. 

The crash happened near White Plains Airport at the 500 block of Country Creek Lane at about 9:25 a.m. Friday morning.

The aircraft lost engine power and crashed, according to a release from the coroner's office. "The pilot was transported to an area hospital with what was reported as critical injuries."

"Two people were onboard the small plane when it went down," a Facebook post from the county read. "No one was injured on the ground." 

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the plane was a Cirrus SR-22. 

The Lexington County Coroner’s Office, the National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA are investigating.
