It’s the size of the fight in the dog.

For the 2nd straight week, Chronicle Country teams proved the validity of the sentence.

In Week 2, it was Class 3A Brookland-Cayce that upended Class 5A Blythewood. The Bearcats followed that with a 42-35 win over Class 3A 3rd ranked Chapman.

For the 3rd time this season, Gray Collegiate played the role of “Giant Killer”. The 2nd ranked Class 2A War Eagles played host to 5th ranked Class 5A Ridge View.

The Blazers joined Class 3A schools Camden and Oceanside Collegiate as teams on the losing end of Gray Collegiate. Led by senior running back KZ Adams’ 210 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns (3 rushing, 1 receiving), Gray Collegiate defeated Ridge View for its 1st ever victory over a Class 5A team.

Over in the Pee Dee Region, Gilbert made its 1st trip to Kellytown to face Class 4A power Hartsville. The Indians fell behind 28-13 at halftime, only to rally back for a 48-47 victory to drop the Red Foxes to 0-3 on the season.

KICKER MAKES SCHOOL HISTORY

Lexington School District 1 has the market cornered on female placekickers in South Carolina.

This past Friday, Riley Barnes joined White Knoll’s Maleah Perry in making the transition from soccer to football.

The 2021 Lexington County Chronicle Girls’ Soccer Player of the Year, Barnes was called into duty with Gilbert’s other placekickers out due to covid-19 protocols.

She became the 1st female to play for the Indians’ football team, going 2-4 in the 48-47 win over Hartsville.

BACK IN ACTION

Several Chronicle Country teams had unscheduled ‘byes’. River Bluff, whose game with Berkeley was cancelled, returns to action to play host to Laurens. After 3 weeks out of action as the school suspended athletic activities, Batesburg-Leesville will just its 2nd game of the season at Strom Thurmond. Meanwhile, Pelion will remain quarantined which resulted in the cancellation of Friday’s game against Gilbert. The Indians returns to the Pee Dee area to face Cheraw.

STREAKS ON THE LINE

After a scheduled bye, 5-time defending Class 5A champion Dutch Fork returns to action Friday at Greenwood. The Silver Foxes will look to extend the following streaks:

•52 straight games without a loss

•51 straight wins over in-state teams

•29 consecutive road victories

QUOTABLE

“There was a lot going on between the two teams. They wanted to say it was a father-son game, but I think we showed them who the daddy was tonight.” - Gray Collegiate head coach Adam Holmes told the website MovinChains during a post-game interview following the 28-18 win over Ridge View.
