Playoffs begin for boys basketball teams in Lexington County

Posted

The boys basketball postseason is here with action getting started this week for many teams in Lexington County.

Last week marked the end of the regular season, and many teams still had something to fight for. Region positioning and playoff placements were on the line as teams looked to capture a few final wins.

Dutch Fork and River Bluff squared off twice to determine the 5A Region 4 champion. The Silver Foxes won the first meeting of the week to even the season series at a game apiece.

The two teams then met in a championship tie-breaker game, winner takes all. Dutch Fork dominated on a neutral Irmo court to win the region and claim the No. 2 overall seed in the upper state bracket.

Despite the loss, River Bluff still earned a first-round bye in the 5A Division I playoffs, securing the fourth-seed

Dutch Fork and River Bluff each hosted their first playoff games on Wednesday.

The Silver Foxes lost on their home floor, falling to Clover 73-67 in overtime. River Bluff won its game against Mauldin and advanced to Saturday's third round.

River Bluff played a close first half in its third-round game at Dorman, but the Gators couldn't keep up in the second half, losing 74-56.

Batesburg-Leesville secured its region’s championship last week and began its playoff run this week. The Panthers took down Pelion and barely beat Saluda to finish 8-2 against conference foes.

Batesburg-Leesville was a bucket away from losing to Saluda but held on to avoid a tie-breaker scenario with Strom Thurmond.

The Panthers hosted Eau Claire on Tuesday and advanced to the next round after a 60-55 win.

Batesburg-Leesville hosted York Prep in the second round. The team was on the verge of elimination until Braylen Davis grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed free throw, dribbled to the wing and nailed a go-ahead three with seconds left.  The Panthers held on to win 61-60 and will hit the road for a game against High Point Academy.

Lexington, Gray Collegiate, Brookland-Cayce and Northside Christian played playoff games on Monday.

The defending 5A champions were knocked out in the first round by Mauldin. Lexington lost 71-44 to end its 2024-25 season 4-19.

Northside Christian’s season also came to an end Monday night. The Crusaders lost their second-round matchup against Augusta Christian 45-33, ending the year with a 16-9 record.

Brookland-Cayce and Gray Collegiate won their opening games of the 4A postseason. Both teams played region opponents and picked up their third win over that team this season.

The Bearcats defeated Midland Valley 73-62. It was the closest game between the two this season after Brookland-Cayce won the two previous matchups by a combined 45 points.

Gray beat Aiken 49-41 and avoided a near upset. It was a terribly slow start for the War Eagles. The team had just one basket in the second quarter and trailed 14-9 at the half.

The War Eagles offense started to heat up in the second half, but Aiken stayed right there with them until the final few minutes. Gray pulled away at the end, finishing on a 15-7 scoring run.

Gray and Brookland-Cayce were back on the court Thursday night. The Bearcats traveled to Crestwood, and the War Eagles hosted May River.

Brookland-Cayce lost a close one on the road, falling to Crestwood 82-75. The 82 Crestwood points were the most conceded by Brookland-Cayce in a game this season.

The War Eagles advanced to the third round following a 78-50 win against May River. Gray is looking to win its first 4A state title and seventh total.

White Knoll, Irmo, Swansea and Pelion played in their first game on Tuesday.

Irmo was the only one of those three teams to advance. The Yellow Jackets defeated Socastee at home 75-50. The team's next outing was on the road against Berkeley where its season came to an end.

Next week's round of games will begin on Monday with Gray Collegiate and Batesburg-Leesville remaining as the last Lexington county teams. The SCHSL basketball championships will take place on March 8 at the Florence Center.
