Police say a scammer posing as a law enforcement officer swindled a Lexington business and a teenage employee out of $700 last week.
A caller pretending to be a member of law enforcement told the employee to take $500 from the business and load it onto a Green Dot prepaid debit card and take $200 from the employee’s bank account to purchase two gift cards, the Lexington Police Department said in a July 16 post on its Facebook page.
“In this case, both the business and teenager became victims of a scam totaling over $700, and our Criminal Investigations Division is doing whatever they can to solve the case,” the post reads.
Police didn’t identify the business or the employee. Officers say law enforcement agencies won’t ask for money on gift cards or prepaid bank cards.
“Please share this with someone in your life who could become a victim of a scam,” the Lexington Police Department said on Facebook. “Crimes like this are preventable. Law enforcement will NEVER ask you to pay a fine or to put money on a mobile bank account card over the phone. Always ask questions and verify.”
