Prosecutor, employee accused of corruption

It is unusual for prosecutors to be charged with the kinds of crimes they prosecute. 5th Circuit Solicitor Dan Johnson has been accused of misconduct in office. A State Grand Jury has charged Johnson and Nicole Holland with embezzling public money. The charge alleges that in 2017 Johnson used state drug forfeitures to pay for personal expenditures with their office-provided Bank of America Credit Card. Misconduct in Office is a misdemeanor with a penalty of up to 10 years in prison. Embezzlement of Public Funds is a felony with a punishment of a fine and imprisonment of not more than 5 years. Anyone convicted is barred from ever holding public office. The case will be prosecuted by attorneys Josh Underwood and LaRone Washington of Attorney General Alan Wilson’s office.
