$2.3 million of gasoline ransom recovered

Worried about another gas shortage like we had last month?

You can relax. Progress is being made.

Federal investigators say they have recovered about $2.3 million in digital currency of the $4.4 million Colonial Pipleine paid Darkside hackers.

Federal officials said they are making progress in undermining criminals’ ability to disrupt American life.

Investigators seized bitcoin valued at roughly $2.3 million.

This was the alleged proceeds from the ransom hack by a suspected Russian-based criminal gang on Georgia-based Colonial Pipeline which supplies gas stations in Lexington County.

The ransomware shortage spurred a run on gasoline here and along the East Coast.

It pushed prices to the highest levels in more than 6 years and left thousands of gas stations without fuel.

The FBI discourages victims from paying ransoms because it can fuel more hacks.

Digital extortion schemes have become so lucrative that they now demand tens of millions of dollars.
