AUniverse of Stories” is the 2019 theme of the Summer Reading Program for children at the Gilbert-Summit Branch Library. A launch party will be held at the library June 1, 10:30 am until 12:30 pm.

Librarian Louise Taylor, said the Summer Reading Program is an out of this world fun time for children to dream big, believe in themselves, and create their own narrative. Children will challenge themselves to try new things and work together to make a positive change in our community.

Galactic Bookworms will be the topic for the first week of the program. Children will blast off with the cosmic antics of space cadets Larry the Duck and Tim Sonefelt. Children will also experience amazing magic, kooky comedy and puppetry.

Children and teens who are registered and participate in the Summer Reading Program can score points for food items from Bojangles and Chick-fil-A. Participants can also earn a reading medal or a lapel pin and ticket to a Lexington Blowfish Baseball game. There is still time to register for the program. For information call 785-5387.

Shiloh United Methodist Church invites children to its annual Vacation Bible School. This year the theme is Yee Haw Celebrating God’s Greatest Gift. Children will get to kick up their heels as they stampede through the wild frontier and celebrate God’s greatest gift of all, Jesus. Children will learn team building games, songs, and multi-sensory Bible adventures. Children will also participate in an outreach project called Projects-With-a-Purpose. Children ages 2 to 6 grades are welcome. Dinner will be provided on Friday and lunch will be provided on Saturday. Dates are Friday, June 7, 5-8 pm; Saturday, June 9, 9 am-1 pm; and Sunday, June 10 during morning worship at 10 am. SUMC is at 1000 Springhill Road. For information and registration, call 892-5656.

Congratulations to Gilbert High School Nurse Elizabeth Clark, who was named the District RN of the year.

A Pet Adoption Day will be held May 31, 2-4 pm, at the Gilbert Middle School car loop. Adoptions are $20 each. This is in partnership with the Lexington County Animal Shelter and GMS teacher Mrs. Hooker’s One Voice Group. For more information, call 821-1700.
