River Bluff, Batesburg-Leesville stars shine, win Athlete of the Week

Posted

High school sports continue to roll along in Lexington County as teams seek more wins ahead of the start of the region season.

These games, while not having much effect on the postseason picture, are important in helping teams build confidence ahead of the games that do count.

This edition’s Athlete of the Week winners both helped their team win key non-conference contests by stuffing the stat sheet with points. These students represent River Bluff and Batesburg-Leesville High School.

Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration, email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchronicle.com.

Brayden Moore

River Bluff quarterback Brayden Moore has been splitting reps this season, but that has not stopped him from contributing big.

The senior had his best game of the season last week as the Gators chomped Spring Valley in a 45-7 win.

Moore threw three touchdown passes in the win, setting a new season-high. It also tied his previous career-high for touchdown passes in a game, which he set last season.

River Bluff is still determining who will be the full-time starter by season’s end, but Moore’s most recent performance should give the team confidence in his abilities, whether he becomes the full-time guy or slips into a permanent backup role.

Kate Shealy

Batesburg-Leesville volleyball star Kate Shealy helped the school defeat a pair of 5A schools last week.

As a 1A school, the Panthers went on the road and knocked off two opponents from the state’s highest classification, and they did it fairly easily.

Batesburg-Leesville beat Spring Valley and Dutch Fork in straight sets. Shealy combined for 14 kills, 12 digs, five aces, two assists and a block.

The Panthers enter this week as one of the hottest teams in Lexington County, sitting at (9-2 overall. The team will look for Sheay to keep up her contributions to maintain their success.
