It’s the final month of the spring sports season, and as the season comes to a close, it is the last opportunity for teams to impress before the postseason.
This week’s Athlete of the Week winners hail from River Bluff and Lexington. These stars shined on the lacrosse and soccer fields, lighting up the scoreboard and providing their team with multiple explosive performances.
Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration, email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchronicle.com.
River Bluff senior Jackson Register is leading the Gators in goals this season.
Register averages almost five goals per game, with 47 through 10 games. He also has 13 assists this season and leads River Bluff in total points.
Last week, he scored nine goals in two games to help River Bluff win both contests.
The team started the week with an 18-1 win over Blythewood. Register scored three goals in that game. Then against Aiken, he scored six goals and added three assists to help create nine of the Gators’ 26 goals.
Register’s play has helped River Bluff get off to a (9-1) start this season. The team is looking to compete with Chapin and Lexington for a district title before rolling into the playoffs.
It will be Register’s last ride with the team, and he will be a large factor in determining how far the team can go.
Lexington’s Anna Epp is having a breakout year for the Wildcats.
After not seeing much action as a sophomore, Epp is having a spectacular junior season and leads Lexington in goals and total points.
Last week, Epp stringed together two of her best performances this season. She had her first high school hat trick in an 8-0 win against Dutch Fork. Then, she followed that up with another hat trick in a 10-0 win against White Knoll.
Epp is now up to 13 goals and four assists this season.
Lexington, (10-1-2) overall and (4-0) in region play, has two key games this week that could further cement its chances to win the region.
With eight games left on the schedule, the team will certainly look for Epp to keep scoring.
