River Bluff’s Joe Cummings leaves wrestling program

Posted

Crowning new champions in boys basketball was not the only notable sporting news this past weekend for River Bluff High School.

This past weekend marked the swan song as head wrestling coach Joe Cummings. For his final state individual tournament at Dreher High School, he saw William Rogers win the Class 5A title at 182 lbs, Mark Kistler finish runner up at 220 lbs and Jack Brown place 4th at 160 lbs.

“I have had a tremendous experience at River Bluff,” he said. “This was my first job out of college. I was so fortunate to have been given the opportunity to teach and coach here for the past 6 years. I can’t thank (Principal Lucas) Clamp and (Lexington District 1 District Athletics Director David) Bennett enough for giving me the opportunity. I have learned and developed so much during my time here. I was always so fortunate to be surrounded by great kids and great coaches.”

Cummings plans to join his fiance in Raleigh, NC where he will pursue job opportunities. He was promoted this past July to head coach following the departure of Evan Moxie and led the Gators to a 5th Region 5-5A title and Lower State runner-up.
