The Gilbert Ruritan Club awarded three scholarships last week from the Ruritan National Foundation Educational Grant Fund. The scholarships were awarded prior to the regular meeting. Lisa Keisler, Treasurer of the Gilbert Ruritans, gave out the scholarships.
The 2021 Ruritan Scholarship recipients are: Alli Brophy, Ashtyn Goff, and Katelyn Barefoot. Brophy is the daughter of Bonnie and Mark Brophy, and will attend Winthrop University. Goff is the daughter of Brett and Lisa Goff, and will attend Clemson. Barefoot is the daughter of Kevin and Amanda Bare foot and will attend Columbia College.
Guest speaker was Tim Oswald, a Lexington County School District 1 board member and retired educator with over 40 years of service. He said the old Gilbert High School building will be torn down soon because it is too costly to repair. The remaining buildings on the property, the cafeteria, gymnasium, etc., will not be demolished but will be used for a pre-school program and the gymnasium will be used by the community for sporting events. GHS alumi will give tours of the old GHS building on July 3, 10 am to noon.
