Make plans to attend the Pelion Ruritan Veterans Memorial service May 27 at 10 am. 17 new engraved pavers have been placed for a total of 337.

This year’s event will feature Chaplain Major Brian K. Smith as speaker. Music will be provided by Soldiers of Faith gospel group, the Pelion High School band and chorus and Ed Wilkes on bagpipes. 1SG Tom Peel, US Army retired, will assist in raising the new flag. Mr. Peel is the oldest living veteran in our community.

The 21 Gun Salute will be provided by the Richland County Honor Guard. The SC Patriot Guard Riders will stand the flag line as they have ever since 2015.

A special thanks to Shelly Laird, owner of Pineview Florist, for donating the wreath for the Veterans ceremony.

Many thanks to Jean Haggard, Melissa Behles, Tom Peele, Sam and Beverly Jackson and Kay Collings for placing new flags on the graves of the veterans at Oaklawn Cemetery. This project is sponsored by the Pelion Ruritan Club.

A change has been made to the summer food service program for Forts Pond Elementary School. Breakfast will now be served from 8:15 to 9:15 am and lunch will be served from 12:15 until 1 pm. The service is available Monday through Thursday June 10 through August 2. Children 18 years and younger are eligible. Meals must be eaten on site and are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Forts Pond Elementary staff members were provided with a yummy lunch by the PTO. Staff members were given special treats all during the week in celebration of Teacher Appreciation. The Fairy Tale Tea was a great success. Mrs. Spence facilitated a manners/social skills/literacy event that made all the girls in K-5 through second grade feel extra special. There was a fashion parade, etiquette lessons, and a photo session. Students have enjoyed their field trips and adventures.

Run Hard was held on May 4 and FPES competitors did an amazing job. They received medals for their hard work while having a super time. Thanks to Coach De-Loach, parents and volunteers who supported this wonderful program.

Awards day at Pelion High will be May
