Safety and security on vacation are key

Posted

You might be hitting the road this Labor Day weekend for one final trip before the students settle in for the school year.

But think twice before announcing your travel plans.

We encourage you to keep your plans to yourself and only tell trusted family members and neighbors.

It’s tempting to share photos from your trip on Facebook or other social media networks.

Save that for after you return home.

Posting about the great time you and your family are having hundreds of miles away is all a bad guy needs to confirm you’re not at home.

Most of us will drive for our last trip of the vacation sea son, but what about the cars we’ll leave behind at home?

Here are a few things you can do to protect those vehicles while they sit in your driveway:

• Take your key. Don’t leave it in or on your vehicle.

• Close and lock all windows and doors when you park.

• Park in well-lit areas, in your garage or carport.

• Never leave valuables in your vehicle.

If you and your family are hitting

the road this weekend, call the Lexington Sheriff’s Department at 803-785- 8230 to let us know.

As part of Project Property Check, our deputies will come by and make sure your home is safe and secure.
