Savannah Hammers Blowfish 15-1 to Extend West Division Lead

Posted

There was an air aplenty of bad deja vu Friday at Grayson Stadium for the visiting Lexington County Blowfish.

For the second time this season, Lexington County lost in resounding fashion to West Division leader and defending Coastal Plain League champion Savannah Bananas.

The score was 15-1 as the game was halted after seven innings in accordance with the league “mercy rule”.

In extending the division lead to 3 ½ games, Savannah (13-4) once again pounded out double-digit runs and hits (16) against the Blowfish.

Led on the mound by Jared Donalson, the Bananas allowed just four hits.  Lexington County's only score came off a solo home run in the seventh by Ryan Ouzts.

The Bananas posted three runs in the first and fourth innings, each after four consecutive hits with one out off Blowfish starter Trey Pooser.

Ty Jackson’s 2-run single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first put the Bananas on the board. Brody Wortham followed with an RBI sacrifice fly.

The bottom of the fourth almost mirrored the first inning for the Bananas. They had four straight hits off Pooser following the first out, with Armando Becerra’s 2-run double and Jack Renwick’s RBI fielder’s choice extending the lead.

Lexington County had little success against Savannah starter Jared Donalson. The Georgia Southwestern State product retired the first 11 batters faced before allowing back-to-back infield singles to Braylin Marine and Brock Vradenburg in the top of the fourth.

He finished with four strikeouts and allowed three hits after throwing a team-high six innings for his fourth win of the season.

Savannah broke the game open with nine runs in the bottom of the sixth off three Blowfish pitchers.

For the third time, the rally took place after one out. It started with an RBI fielder’s choice by Becerra, an RBI hit by pitch by Jackson and two-run single by Wortham.

All of the runs came against Austin Sandifer. Reliever Bryan Sandifer fared no better in allowing four runs, three off a triple by Travis Justus and an RBI walk to Landry Mead and a hit batsman.

Josh Topper got the final two outs of the inning, but not before allowing a RBI double by Drew Yneista.

Ouzts ended the Blowfish's streak of 16 straight scoreless innings dating back to last season to the Bananas in the top of the seventh. Facing reliever Blake McGehee, Ouzts ripped a one-out 2-2 pitch over the fence for the Blowfish’s fifth homer of the season.

In two meetings, Savannah has outscored Lexington County 26-0 and outhit the Blowfish 33-7.

Lexington County (9-6)  plays host to High Point-Thomasville at 7:05 p.m. Saturday. Prior to the game, fathers and their children will have an opportunity to play catch on the Lexington County Baseball Stadium field.

It’s also “Super Heroes Night” at the stadium where fans can dress as their favorite comic book character. Following the game, the Blowfish will have a fireworks display.
