Saxe Gotha Memory Café

Presbyterian church creates dementia ministry

Church Buzz

Leaders of Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church have seen many of their senior adults become caregivers for loved ones affected by dementia.

They recognized that the need for help was there and growing.

It was important to develop a ministry that would support the caregivers and those affected by dementia. They wanted to help eliminate the expense of hiring a nurse to watch them at home.

After working with programs from around the country, they developed the Saxe Gotha Memory Café.

This unique program brings together caregivers and those afflicted with varying forms of dementia for encouragement, fellowship, refreshment, and activities – all provided at no cost.

The church is blessed to have an outstanding team of volunteers who have had their own personal experiences dealing with dementia in some way.

Their experiences help make a comfortable environment for the participants. And it has become a rich source of encouragement for the caregivers.

They meet the last Thursday of each month at “The Lighthouse” which is directly behind the main campus worship center.

They have fellowship, sing, do some light exercise and have snacks.

The caregivers as well as those with dementia are invited. The ministry is open to all, and Saxe Gotha would love to have additional people and volunteers from the greater Lexington community.

If you are interested in knowing more about this unique ministry or to volunteer, please, contact Pansy Floyd at 803-350-7770, ext. 11.
