Some of American cinema’s most unforgettable moments have something in common: the music of John Williams.

On Sunday, Oct. 4 at 3:30 p.m., the South Carolina Philharmonic will bring those iconic scores to life at Harbison Theatre at Midlands Technical College with “America 250: The Music of John Williams,” a family-friendly musical celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary. The concert will feature music from some of the most recognizable films in American cinema, including “Star Wars,” “E.T.,” “Indiana Jones,” “Saving Private Ryan” and “The Patriot,” under the direction of Morihiko Nakahara.

Performed live by the South Carolina Philharmonic, the program will take audiences through the heroic fanfares, sweeping themes and emotional scores that have accompanied generations of moviegoers.

The performance is part of the nationwide commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary, offering Midlands audiences an opportunity to mark the milestone through a distinctly American art form: the movies and music that have helped shape the country’s popular culture.

“John Williams has created music that so many of us recognize within just a few notes,” said Kristin Cobb, executive director of Harbison Theatre. “You may remember seeing these films for the first time as a child, and now you have an opportunity to bring your own children or grandchildren and experience that music together, performed live by the South Carolina Philharmonic. It’s a really special way for us to celebrate America’s 250th through stories and music that have connected generations.”

For younger audience members, the concert offers an accessible introduction to the power of a live orchestra through music they may already recognize from the screen. For longtime movie fans, it offers the chance to hear familiar scores in a new way.

General admission tickets are $50.

Students, seniors (60+) and military personnel will receive a $5 discount on Signature Series shows at checkout.
