School covid-19 cases drop

Exact numbers still kept from public

Only 8 Lexington County schools this week reported covid-19 cases.

That is 10 fewer than were reported last week and half as many as were reported 9 days ago.

Exactly how many cases were found in each school has not been revealed.

Health and school officials say that exact numbers would invade privacy.

State Rep. Chip Huggins of Lexington County has joined the Chronicle in appealing to Gov. Henry McMaster for disclosure to the public.

“The exact number of cases at a school is in no way a violation of anyone’s privacy,” said Bill Rogers, executive director of the SC Press Association.

“Parents have right to know what is going on at their schools.

“Withholding this only hurts DHEC’s credibility.”

The Chronicle wants your opinion on whether the schools and DHEC should lift the veil of secrecy.

Should parents and grandparents be made aware of exactly how many of their children and teachers have tested positive?
