Schools seek $455M on Nov. 6 ballot

Posted

Voters in 2 districts will be asked to approve $455 million for improved schools.

Lexington 1 in the Gilbert, Lexington, Pelion and White Knoll areas is seeking $365 million in bond money to build 2 new elementary schools, replace 3 schools and expand and renovate 20 other schools.

Lexington 3 in Batesburg-Leesville is seeking $90 million for a new high school on the existing property and renovations to Batesburg-Leesville Primary School.

For school boards in the 5 county districts, 33 candidates are running, many of them for the first time.

In municipal elections, only the Town of Lexington has contested races in which the mayor and 3 incumbents face opposition.

A heated race for Sen. John Courson’s seat has been waged between Democrat Dick Harpootlian and Republican Ben Dunn.

Both have protested attack ads claiming Harpootlian is a supporter of Socialist Bernie Sanders and that Dunn’s campaign has been financed by controversial SC Electric & Gas donations.

In the state superintendent of education race, Democrat Israel Romero withdrew after reports he was convicted of the unauthorized practice of law.
