Raw sewage flowing into the Saluda River from a flooded treatment plant in Columbia is affecting water quality here.

A wastewater treatment plant in Columbia affected by flooding is discharging raw sewage into the Saluda River.

The Palmetto Wastewater Reclamation Stoop Creek plant is in northwest Columbia near the I-20/I-26 interchange, just south of Bush River Road.

Stoop Creek, which feeds into the Saluda River south of I-20 is the discharge.

Officials say heavy rains last week caused the creek to overflow and flooded the plant.

The company sent out a “Sanitary Sewer Overflow Notification” last Thursday night.

The Department of Health and Environmental Control was on site.

Congaree Riverkeeper urged people to not swim in the Saluda River south of I-20.

As of Monday evening, Palmetto Wastewater Reclamation was still working to restore operations at the treatment plant.
