Talking Points

State lawmakers want to put an age limit on tanning beds.

Currently, teens under 18 can use a tanning bed with parental consent.

A proposed bill would put a stop to that.

More than 140 people in South Carolina die each year from melanoma, the main type of skin cancer, WLTX reported recently.

Research shows that tanning devices are one the most avoidable risk factors in developing melanoma.

A statewide student survey found that 22% of 12th grade girls had used a tanning bed.

According to the American Cancer Society, a single use can increase skin cancer risk by 59%.

A bill has been filed that would make the age of use 18 without exceptions.

Currently, 18 states prohibit tanning for anyone under 18 with no exemptions.
