Spring sports are getting spicy as the region season heats up for every team in Lexington County.
With these important games on the schedule, teams are tightening their rotations and leaning on a consistent group of contributors. This has given many of Lexington’s biggest stars the chance to impress with extended playing time.
This week’s Athlete of the Week winners both do their work on the soccer field and lit up the scoreboard to guide their teams to victory.
Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration, email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchronicle.com.
River Bluff midfielder Harper Vasquez had himself a game against Irmo.
The sophomore was responsible for three of the Gators’ seven goals, scoring two and assisting on another. It was his highest-scoring game this season.
Vasquez has found the back of the net four times this season. The other two goals came in a pair of games against A.C. Flora and West Ashley. He has doubled his goal total from his freshman year, when he scored two times.
River Bluff is rolling right now, entering this week with a (7-2) record. Vasquez is second on the team in goals and points. For the team to keep its momentum going, it’ll need Vasquez to maintain his play.
Lexington’s Adriana Dunat continues to be the team’s No. 1 goal-scoring threat.
Dunat has 10 goals on the season and is averaging a team-high 1.5 per game. She also gets her teammates involved with three assists to lead the team in total points.
In last week’s win over Irmo, Dunat scored twice. It was her third game of the season with multiple goals.
The senior has been an offensive weapon all four years she’s played on Lexington’s varsity team. She has scored at least 13 goals every year and has seen constant improvement. Last season, she finished with a career-high 19 goals.
Dunat has a shot at going for even more goals this season. With 10 games to go, if she sticks to her averages, she’ll get there.
