The high school soccer season has reached its midway point in South Carolina as many local teams continue to find their footing.
As we enter this middle portion of the season, several teams from the area remain in contention for a region title and have started to play some of their best ball.
The Gray Collegiate girls continue to be one of the most impressive teams in Lexington County, beginning this week as the lone remaining unbeaten team at 10-0 overall.
Gray has dominated almost every opponent they’ve played this season, winning all but two games by shutout. The team is outscoring opponents 51-3 this year.
Airport transfer Victoria Coleman has made her mark on the team, leading the group in scoring and assists. Her sister Vanessa is also playing at a high level.
Gilbert, while not undefeated, is not far behind Gray in the standings. The Indians are 4-1 in region games with their only loss coming against Aiken in a game that went to penalties.
Gilbert and Gray are set to play on April 7.
The River Bluff, Chapin and Lexington girls teams have started to separate themselves from the rest of their region. The three teams are a combined 7-2 in region games, with River Bluff holding a slight edge as the only undefeated team.
Chapin holds a win over Lexington, but River Bluff has a win over them. Lexington and River Bluff have not played yet and will meet for the first of two times this season on Friday.
Swansea is another girls team worth keeping an eye on as the season begins its final stretches. The Tigers are 5-1 this year and a game behind first-place Fox Creek. Swansea lost to Fox Creek 2-0 in the pair’s first meeting. The teams will play again on April 29.
There are also a similar number of teams on the boys side competing at a high level midway through the season.
The Chapin boys are 3-0 in conference games with River Bluff and Lexington not far behind with one loss apiece. All three teams are playing better than they did in the out-of-region portion of the schedule
Gray Collegiate is competing with North Augusta, Aiken and Brookland-Cayce. All four teams have one region loss entering this week and can finish in any order when it’s all said and done.
The Swansea team is also having an exceptional start this season, sitting at 6-2 overall and 4-0 against its region competition.
This week will feature many prominent meetings and see teams move up and down the standings. With half a season left to play, each outing becomes more important as teams try to get into postseason form.
Victoria Coleman recorded a hat trick with three goals for Gray Collegiate in a game against Midland Valley.
Megan Wooten had eight saves and gave up no goals in Gilbert’s win against North Augusta.
Tanner Legette scored two goals for Gray Collegiate in a 4-1 War Eagles win over Midland Valley.
Anna Allen had three goals for River Bluff as the Gators dominated Irmo in a 10-0 win.
Cooper Hughes saved five shots and allowed no goals as Chapin won a 2-0 shutout against River Bluff.
Juel Rivers finished with the game’s only two goals in the Swansea boys’ win over Newberry.
