South Carolinians to receive $2.1M data breach settlement

Posted

A massive Equifax data breach in 2017 endangered millions of South Carolinians.

Now the credit reporting company must pay $425 million in restitution.

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, along with 49 other attorneys general, launched an investigation into the breach which affected more than 147 million customers – nearly half the US population.

Breached information included social security numbers, names, dates of birth, addresses, credit card numbers, and driver’s license numbers.

The personal information of more than 2,366,000 South Carolinians was compromised.

The investigation found Equifax’s failure to maintain a reasonable security system enabled hackers to penetrate its systems, leading to the largest-ever breach of consumer data.

Under the terms of the settlement, Equifax agreed to provide a single Consumer Restitution Fund of up to $425 million – with $300 million dedicated to consumer redress.

If the $300 million is exhausted, the Fund can increase by up to an additional $125 million.

The company will also offer affected consumers extended credit-monitoring services for 10 years.
