The Isle of Palms City Council has appointed Springdale Police Chief Kevin Cornett as its new police chief.

Cornett was named at a special meeting Monday night, according to a report from WCSC -Live 5-TV in Charleston.

Cornett’s wife, Sarah, posted the following on Facebook Monday evening:

“To say I’m beyond proud of Kevin Cornett is an understatement... He never ceases to amaze me and I cannot wait to start this new chapter of our lives within the Isle of Palms community. Thank you to everyone who has been praying over our unspoken prayer requests.”

Cornett’s first day on the job as the new chief will be Monday, June 3, according to the TV report.

Cornett has been the Springdale chief of police since 2012.

“My time in Springdale has been phenomenal. It’s been more than a job. It’s more like family,” said Cornett. “I will miss it.”

Cornett also said there are good people in Spring-dale, and he has faith in the police department staff he leaves behind.

He also said he has made some recommendations regarding his replacement upon his departure.

“I have high confidence in the leadership in Springdale, including (town) council. They have been great.”

Cornett also said he is very excited to be going to Isle of Palms for a new opportunity.

“My wife is from the coast, she has roots down there,” Cornett said. “I’m eager to get going.”
