State employment sets record

The number of South Carolinians employed continues a record climb.

The unemployment rate remained at a historic low in 2019’s 1st quarter.

The number of individuals working moved substantially higher by an estimated 6,826 people, setting a new record of 2,274,185.

Unemployment estimates increased in March by 1,803 to 76,309 people.

The state’s labor force increased by about 8,629 to 2,350,494 people.

The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained at 3.2%.

Since March of 2018, employment gains moved higher by about 41,030 people, and the labor force estimate rose by nearly 32,396 people. The level of unemployed moved lower by roughly 8,634 people.

US unemployment was unchanged at 3.8%.

In March, seasonally adjusted, non-farm payrolls decreased by 2,100 to 2,170,000. The decline was in professional and business services (down 3,200), financial activities (down 700), leisure and hospitality (down 700 and construction (down 500).

Reporting increases were education and health services (up 800), manufacturing (up 700), other services (up 600), government (up 500) and trade, transportation and utilities (up 200).

Since March 2018, South Carolina’s economy has added 31,000 seasonally adjusted nonfarm jobs.
