State money should follow the student

Posted

Our education system is broken and it’s not because of inadequate capital. The time has come to unleash the power of the free market on the education establishment.

We do that by sending the money to pay for students’ education, not for the schools, and by returning decision making power in education back to parents.

Moms and dads know the wants, needs and abilities of their children better than any non-elected bureaucrat.

A parent should be able to choose the learning environment that best suits their student be it public, private, charter, singlegender, Montessori, home school or other.

About the proposal to add 2 more justices to the state Supreme Court, changing the size of the court only matters if we change the way judges get there. The process by which the General Assembly elects judges presents major conflicts of interest.

Not only do lawyer-legislators elect the judges they argue cases in front of but the lawmakers charged with screening candidates for consideration often only recommends liberal activist applicants.

RJ May, Lexington

RJ May is a 1st-term Lexington County member of the General Assembly.
