Free Fridays
The Riverbanks Zoo & Garden (500 Wildlife Pkwy.) launches their Free Fridays series. Every Friday throughout the months of January and February, residents of Richland and Lexington counties can receive free daily admission to Riverbanks Zoo and Garden every Friday with proof of residency, meaning a valid driver’s license, property tax statement or vehicle registration. It’s a perfect opportunity to take the family and see what Riverbanks Zoo & Garden has to offer. Riverbanks is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays. Visit riverbanks.org for more information.

As Seen On TV: Southern Songwriters w/ Patrick Davis (concert)
The Harbison Theatre at Midlands Technical College (7300 College Blvd.) invites you to see some of our best local and regional talent at the Southern Songwriters event. Host and musician Patrick Davis welcomes Big Loud Recording artist Maggie Rose, piano playing master Gabe Dixon and legendary Atlanta musician David Ryan Harris. Patrick, Maggie, Gabe and David Ryan meet up often due to their touring and recording schedules but rarely get the opportunity to play together. Friday Dinner Cruise
The Spirit of Lake Murray (docked at 216 Shadowood Dr.) hosts a Friday night dinner cruise around Lake Murray. The boat will open at 5:30 p.m. and the cruise will depart promptly at 6:30 p.m. and return at 8:30 p.m. Enjoy open seating and full bar in indoor and outdoor seating (seating is first come first served). Dick Goodwin presents The Big Band Experience (concert)
Chayz Lounge (607 Meeting St.) and conductor Dick Goodwin invite you to another night of unpredictable jazz with The Big Band Experience. High Tea
Stone River restaurant (121 Alexander Rd.) invite you to a sophisticated Sunday experience with their High Tea event. Start your experience with a glass of champagne then choose from the selection of premium Rishi teas. Next, enjoy tea sandwiches, scones and sweet treats, all served on a three-tier display with assorted China. Finally, you can tour Stone River listening to classical music and taking in the view of downtown Columbia. Across the county line

The SC State Museum (301 Gervais St.) invites you to their digital dome planetarium experience, Áróra! on Friday, Jan. 24. This immersive cinematic journey takes guests across remote Icelandic landscapes and into space to find and understand the secrets of the mystical, eerie Northern Lights and explore how these stunning displays of colors have also been seen on other planets and moons throughout our galaxy. The Newberry Opera House (1201 McKibben St.) welcomes the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra of Moravia on Friday, Jan. 24. One of the Czech Republic’s oldest and most esteemed ensembles, the Philharmonic (led by conductor Pavel Sanjdr) arrives with a rich program highlighting both classical and contemporary works by composers like Dvořák and Smetana. The SC Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum (310 Gervais St.) hosts one of its most popular annual events on Saturday, Jan. 25: Swordfest. Fans of bladework and swordcraft can hone their skills with demonstrations like Iaido, the art of sword-drawing and traditional Japanese sword art from Dan Bernardo of WellWithin Martial Arts (including a live cutting exhibition with a samurai sword). Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park (2300 Greene St.) invites you to celebrate the 37th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration on Saturday, Jan. 25. This gathering honors the enduring legacy of Dr. King and his profound impact and begins with a wreath laying at 3:06 p.m. at the corner of Greene and Harden Streets before the commemoration starts at the park at 4 p.m. This event is free to attend.
